Someone said to me when I just had the girls, “Two’s a great number. Better for the environment.”
Those words really stuck.
When I found out I was having a third, I decided to try find ways to be as eco as possible. I also wanted to keep costs down, and in some ways the two go hand in hand.
Here are the ways I’ve found to make it more eco friendly having a third child.

No plane holidays

In 2022, we took Ida and Marfs on a plane. It was stressful, hot, and we had so much stuff.
After this holiday we decided to holiday at Butlins, Centre Parcs, and UK breaks.
No new plastic

The kid can have toys, but if it’s plastic, it will be second hand. I follow this rule with the girls, too. I get Polly Pockets etc from Facebook and Vinted.
Second hand clothes

Everything I have got for the baby has been second hand. Some of the things I got were brand new but from Vinted or the charity shop. There are so many clothes in the world already, I don’t need to contribute to this.
Reusable nappies

I have about 30 reusable nappies in the loft. I tried to use them with the girls but I wasn’t great at it to be honest. I’ve decided I’ll do it in the summer months when the baby has more of a schedule and we can dry them outside (drying them inside just made the house smell of wee!)
Public transport

With three kids and a smallish car, we might not have much of a choice. If we go somewhere all together, we need to consider the public transport options. The kids actually LOVE getting the bus, and I hate getting them in and out the car, so this might be a blessing.
Breastfeeding

I was lucky enough to feed both the girls, and I hope to do the same. Breastfeeding is more sustainable as it doesn’t use water or come in plastic. Reusable breast pads are also a friend.
Eco friendly baby ideas
Having another baby will impact the planet. But, there are ways to make that impact minimal. You can also off-set some of your carbon footprint by not using the car for a day or weekend, eat local food, reduce or stop eating meat, always remember your reusable bags, and only buy what you need – food and clothes!
